The construction of the Sardar Sarovar dam was halted in June, 1995 by the Supreme Court of India based on a petition filed by the Narmada Bachao Andolan. In an interim order in February 1999, the Court gave the go-ahead to raise the height of the dam by an additional 4.7 m (80.3 m to 85.0 m) plus 3m of "humps" leading to a height of 88m.
