From Argwings Odera on behalf of the Civil Society Delegates of the Southern African Symposium on the WCD Report:
Dear Environment Gate Keepers,
People Affected by Dams in Southern Africa declared yesterday August 1 as the Africa Day of the Narmada. The affected people, presenting their declaration at the WCD Report Symposium at Eskom Center in Midrand, Gauteng Province, declared August 1 as their day of fasting in solidarity with communities facing submergence because of the Sardar Sarovar Dam in India.
The dam-affected people and NGOs in South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland and Mozambique have declared a 24-hour fast on food and electricity starting 00:00hr on August 1 to 24:00 hr on August 1. They will switch off everything electronic including cell-phones and will survive only on water for drinking.
Africa Dams has been given the honour of co-ordinating the Africa Day of the Narmada. To this end, we call on all environmentalists, friends, volunteers, family, interns all over the world, and those doing duties in space, to join in the Africa Day of the Narmada on August 1. Our information network is only limited to you and we will be glad if you could also help launch this important solidarity message within your networks.

Thank you and the struggle intensifies.
