Sardar Sarovar dam construction to resume in four days
New Delhi, Oct 18
(UNI)

After getting the green signal from the Supreme Court, the Gujarat Government today decided to resume construction of controversial Rs 20,000 crores Sardar Sarovar Dam in next three/ four days and committed to supply the water in the drought prone areas of Kutch and Saurashtra by June, 2002.

"The work on the project would be started on war footing and we are hopeful of completing the project within next one and half years", a cheerful Narmada Minister of Gujarat Jaynarayan Vyas and SSNNL Chairman M Bhupendrasiha Chudasama told reporters.

The Supreme Court verdict has put an end to the six years old litigation initiated by the Narmada Bachao Andolan activists. "We are confident to supply the potable water in the north Gujarat by June, 2000 as the construction on 70,000KMs canal network will also be taken up soon", the Minister said.

Vyas said that the Government had already spent more than Rs 10,500 crores and is likely to invest similar amount in the next one and a half year to complete the project. Describing the Apex court verdict, Vyas said that the court has also set up a new mechanism and guidelines, which would enable state government to complete the project at the earliest.
