Better sense

The Nation is grateful to the Supreme Court for the wise, though belated, judgment regarding the Sardar Sarovar project. A few hundred people led by two ambitious ladies, Medha Patkar and Arundhati Roy, have been, by agitations and litigation, holding crores of people of three states to ransom for the last six years.

Pubic money — more than Rs 10,000 crore — had been a dead investment. Timely completion of the dam would have mitigated the miseries of the people during last summer’s terrible drought. -J.K. MAGO, Panchkula

Universal appeal

Regarding the articles by Bhaskar Ghose (October 31 and November 1), the popularity of the mythological films and serials is unquestionable. The Ramayana and the Mahabharata are a treasure house of wisdom and culture of the subcontinent. Mirroring society of that era, the holy river of Ram katha originated in Sanskrit. Kambar sang the Ramayana in Tamil, Krittivas in Bengali, Tulsidas in Hindi and Guru Govind Singh in Gurumukhi. The Buddhists and the Jains have their own versions.

Ram, the epic hero, will continue to be remembered for his heroic deeds and physical, spiritual and emotional harmony. The secular and universal spirit of the epics deserves to be kept above all political gimmicks. -JAGDISH CHANDRA TYAGI, Dehradun
